Luanda Gets First Lead at UCO

It’s an exciting moment for Luanda de Hilster and all who know her: Luanda has been cast as Miss Adelaide in the upcoming production of Guys and Dolls at the University of Central Oklahoma’s musical theatre program. As a sophomore (she will be a junior when the musical opens), this marks her very first lead role at UCO — a major milestone for any performer, and a particularly fitting one for someone with Luanda’s unique talents.

Luanda has long been known among her peers and mentors as a true “triple threat,” a performer who can sing, dance, and act at a professional level. This combination of skills is rare, even among strong theatre students, and coupling this with Luanda’s innate comedic talents, it’s exactly what makes her such an ideal choice for the role of Adelaide.

In Guys and Dolls, Miss Adelaide is a showgirl at the Hot Box Club, full of personality, humor, and heart. She’s a vibrant, comedic character who longs for a more stable life with her long-time fiancé, Nathan Detroit. Adelaide’s songs, such as the iconic “Adelaide’s Lament,” demand not just vocal strength but also the ability to deliver comic timing and emotional nuance. Her dance numbers require energy and precision, while her scenes call for an actress who can balance wit, vulnerability, and charm. In short, Adelaide is one of the great musical theatre roles — and one that demands excellence across the board.

Luanda was nominated as best supporting actress two years in a row for her roles as Mrs. Tottendale in “The Drowsy Chaperone” and Minnie Faye in “Hello Dolly” – two roles that not only required a triple threat, but comedic talent.

Luanda’s casting reflects just how well she fits this challenging part. Her strong, expressive singing voice, beautifully poetic dancing, and natural acting talent make her a natural Adelaide. Those who have watched Luanda perform throughout the years know that she brings not only technical skill but also a genuine warmth and authenticity to every role she takes on — qualities that will no doubt bring Adelaide to life in a memorable way.

The production will run from September 25–28, 2025, at UCO’s Mitchell Hall, and anticipation is already building. Friends, family, and fans alike are already planning to travel to Oklahoma from all over the country to see Luanda take the stage and show what she can do in this exciting role.

Congratulations, Luanda! Your hard work, passion, and talent are paying off — and this is just the beginning!
